Climate Week NY°C

http://www.climateweeknyc.org

Hosted by the The Climate Group, the United Nations, the City of New York, as well as other ecologically-oriented organizations, Climate Week NY°C gathers hundreds of govermental and business leaders, as well as thousands of citizens, from all over the world to open dialogue and gather support for a global resolution at the UN's Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.

To make this year's events run smoothly, The Climate Group needed a way to share the various event details, event locations, sponsors, and updates with the world at a moment's notice.  Teaming up with Pixels & Pulp, webmeadow delivered a site that was flexible enough that the Climate Group could add, edit, and remove content quickly, and structured enough that new content fit seemlessly without need for further professional design.

A couple of our favorite features:

  • Automatic event integration with Google Maps, creating an up-to-the-minute, all-encompassing event map, complete with address information and links to full pages about each event.
  • Automagic sizing and placement of new sponsor logos at the bottom of every page when a sponsor is added to the general list.

See the previous years' sites at Climate Week NYC 2010 and Climate Week NYC 2009.

Lucy's Love Bus

http://www.lucyslovebus.org

Lucy Grogan was 8 years old when she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Throughout four years of treatment, Lucy enjoyed the benefits of acupuncture, massage and Reiki. In the weeks before she died, Lucy told her mother that she wanted to start a program that would provide free integrative therapies to children undergoing cancer treatment.  Lucy’s Love Bus eases the suffering of pediatric patients by providing free integrative therapies such as massage, acupuncture, and therapeutic horseback riding, to children with cancer, and children coping with late effects of prior cancer treatment.

This site includes informational pages, a blog, and some great photo galleries.  There are also some features that may not seem too interesting for a visitor -- PDF downloads of blank practitioner/patient surveys, the application for children interested in recieving complementary therapies -- but those are saving a huge amount of time for the LLB office staff by keeping all the information in one place and easily organized.

Right around the time we started work on this site, I read an article that offered the translation of the Sanskrit word 'guru' as 'one who moves us towards the light'.  Cancer is a hard thing to talk about, and pediatric cancer -- well, I get kind of teary even thinking about it.  With this compelling design by Megan at Pixels & Pulp, the entire time I was building this site I kept coming back to that definition.  Lucy, looking down at us from the top of every page, moving us towards the light.

Arts in Reach

http://www.artsinreach.org

Located in southern New Hampshire, Arts in Reach provides mentoring to teenage girls through arts programs:  music, dance, theatre, poetry, and more.  All programs are completely free for participants, and transportation is provided for girls who need it.  AIR wants girls to build strong relationships and conflict resolution skills, develop the ability to be reflective and to set life goals, and to gain understanding of the arts and cultural expression in our society.

AIR needed a site that would allow them to get all kinds of information about programs and events out to participants, community members, and volunteers.  Their site has plenty of space to feature visiting artists, corporate sponsors, and news about the organization.  And of course it has a snazzy gallery to feature art, photos, and poetry from past programs!

We were armed with a lucious design from Elise at Pixels & Pulp -- also a member of the AIR Board of Directors; you might say this project was a bit of an inside job!  As with all of our sites, the folks at AIR are in complete control of the content on the site:  they can add everything from new event listings to staff members to entire photo galleries at the click of a button.

School Play

http://www.schoolplaythemovie.com/

We remember 5th grade as a period of spelling bees, lots of reading, and mathletes (actually, only Eileen did mathletes, she's that way).

I'm not sure what Rick, Eddie, and the crew over at EyePop Productions remember from 5th grade, but they've made sure that you'll remember this 5th grade class at Mamaroneck Avenue School in the New York suburbs.  Armed with video cameras, EyePop set out to document the school production of The Wizard of Oz, including profiles of the individual actors.  The result?  An award-winning film that takes you back to math homework and the cusp of childhood.

As a product, EyePop wanted a website that informed people about the movie, its players, and its production, while of course allowing anyone to buy it.  As a cause, they wanted a site that could serve as a rallying point for the preservation and expansion of arts education within schools, complete with blog, partnering, newsletter integration, and those helpful social media outlets of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and MySpace, to really get the word out.

Teaming up with Pixels & Pulp, we built a site that accomplished EyePop's goals, gracefully giving visitors a sense of what the film is, many ways to buy it, and offering a plethora of ways to participate in the mission.

The Collaborative

http://www.mentalhealthworkforce.org

The Collaborative is a San Francisco Bay Area organization that combines county, public, and private resources to support mental wellness in the workplace.  Mental health has long been stigmatized in the United States (and elsewhere), and The Collaborative's goal is to "create a workforce that understands and supports wellness and recovery, is culturally and linguistically competent, and includes consumers and family members throughout the mental health system."

To help get to that goal, The Collaborative needed to distribute information about itself and its resources to their wide audience of staff and members, mental health practicianers, individuals, and partner organizations, the more quickly the better.

Teaming up with our Bay Area design partners, Rock + Feather, webmeadow built a site that provides immediate mental health resources in the form of local organizations, downloadable documents, and videos, while also providing in-depth information about The Collaborative, including downloadable meeting minutes and presentations, an organizational events calendar, and a newsletter based on the look of the website.

LifePortal

http://www.lifeportal.com

The forward-thinking folks at LifePortal, Inc. had an idea: what if there was a website that could help people between the ages of 16 and 25 transition into adulthood?  Young adults in that age range, especially those coming from the foster care system, don't have much experience with finding jobs, finding places to live, or paying taxes, for example, so such a website would have to provide tools, answers, and support for people in this transitional phase of their lives.

LifePortal, Inc. came to us with some core goals and features, and we worked together to expand those ideas into a more organic whole that is alive today, with sections for Resources (places to eat, places to eat, job boards, etc.), How-To Articles, Community Forums, and Video uploads -- all accessible to everyone.  Beyond articles and resources, members have their own free-form blog space, profile, and message center to share and explore.

We're happy to report that the site is a success, boasting quite a few users, including several youth centers and social institutions.  There are some great upgrades in the works, too, including instant housing notifications (useful when you need a place to stay tonight) and online classes.

Pixels & Pulp

http://www.pixelsandpulp.com

In their own words, Pixels & Pulp is a design firm specializing in branding, print collateral and web design.  In our words, the Pixels & Pulp team is awesome!  They're extremely talented and they share our core values:  a commitment to sustainability and minute attention to detail.

The core of pixelsandpulp.com is the team's extensive client list and portfolio.  It was important to allow web users to see their work as easily as possible, so we built the portfolio items to display in their own categories ("web design", for example), to link to specific client names in the Client list, and to easily reference other items for the same client or project.  The result is a portfolio that creates curiosity (just try to look at the project icons on the right and not click on one!), has lots of interplay between related work, and gives a good overall sense of Pixels & Pulp's strengths.

Adding further functionality to the fabulous graphic design, the team can manage the entire site themselves.  And when it's time to expand functionality, the systems are in place to easily do so (on the down low:  a blog addition is already in the works!).

Baldwin Brothers

http://www.baldwinbrothersinc.com

Baldwin Brothers is an independent financial advisory firm that focuses on building and preserving wealth for clients.  That's great, but what really excited us at webmeadow HQ is that they build and preserve said wealth by being pioneers of socially responsible investing.  Even better (viscerally), their office space is a model of green building, built with passive solar and cooling principles and filled with recycled carpeting and furniture, bamboo cabinetry, motion-sensored lights, and lots more.

As part of a full-scale rebranding by Pixels & Pulp, Baldwin Brothers needed a website that expanded upon their principles and investment vehicles.  They wanted the site to be elegant, straight-forward, and easy to navigate, and they wanted to be able to update the site with new information over time.  We think the site worked out well, and more importantly, so did they.

The Green Alliance

http://www.greenalliance.biz/

Founded in Kittery, Maine by Sarah Brown, the Green Alliance is a collaboration of Seacoast businesses aimed at becoming sustainable. The businesses offer discounts to "Green Card" holders -- regular people who want to patronize local green businesses. Save Green by going green! (Horrible pun but someone had to make it. The things I do for you.)

Every GA business has a profile page on the site, detailing their green creds and information about the business and the discount they offer. There are lots of news articles written about GA members, so we were able to create a way to automatically link the articles to their respective businesses without the need for lots of double-entries on the part of the staff. This site has some super-cool features designed by our pals (and Green Alliance members!) Pixels & Pulp -- check out the cool logos in the footer, and the great polaroids (the site automatically creates a custom image for each business!) sprinkled throughout the site.

The Spirit Garden

http://www.thespiritgarden.com/

The Spirit Garden is a holistic health business dedicated to helping people achieve health and vitality through nutrition, self-discover, and reflection.  Ellen Lalicata, Owner and CEO, wanted a website that was just as holistic as her business, covering not only consultation services, courses, and events, but also inspiration media, recipes, and tips.  In short, they wanted ways to build both the business and the community.

Tag-teaming with design superstars Pixels & Pulp, we delivered a site that The Spirit Garden can use as a resource for all facets of their operation:  ways for clients to signup and pay for courses, consultation services, and events; sections for recipes and holistic resources; a blog for free-form inspiration; and ways to show off the latest information on the Home page.  As with all webmeadow websites, Ellen and her team also have the ability to update anything on the website whenever inspiration strikes.

Miller's Cafe and Bakery

http://www.millerscafeandbakery.com/

Like most people, your next vacation plans probably include Littleton, NH.  And while you're here, you will probably find yourself hungry in the middle of the day, and wishing, "Wouldn't it be great if I could have some amazing food and sit right by the river?"  Well my friend, you are in luck!  Head over to Miller's Cafe and Bakery!

We've known David for a while, and when he wanted a website, he called us. (He also calls us when his computers go on the fritz in the middle of the busiest week of the year. We keep telling him not to defrost scones right on the motherboard, but does he listen?) David knew just how the cafe could benefit from a website -- he wanted tourists to be able to find the Cafe's location and hours before they came to Littleton, and he wanted locals to be able to keep up with the ever-changing menu options*.

David gave us a stellar review over on the Services page, and building the site was a great experience. We have heard a number of stories of people who were excited to find the site after a vague Google search hoping for that yummy "riverside cafe in Littleton". The cafe also offers free WiFi access (a rarity up here in the North Country)! Check out the site, then visit the cafe!

* The big thing at Miller's right now is the Flip Bread sandwich. Imagine a fresh pita bread (and I mean fresh! Cooked from dough-to-bread right in front of your eyes!) filled with delicious warm flavor combos -- my favorite is the Athena, filled with lamb and roasted potatos and curry-mint yogurt. Taste-tastic!

Generation Green

http://www.generationgreenthebook.com/

"Generation Green is the ultimate eco teen guide for greening up everything in your life while having fun!" The site is the online presence for this great book written by mother and son team Linda and Tosh Sivertsen. Linda called us up one day and it became clear pretty quickly that this was a great match for everyone -- green book, green people, green website!

Add into that mix the amazing design skills of Elise over at Pixels and Pulp, and we ended up with a website that we're all really proud of.

Of course, it's got all the standard features like search-engine-optimization, and content that Linda and Tosh can update themselves. Tosh has a video blog filled with fun (and funny) green advice aimed at teens, and there's a whole section of Green Tips to help you green up your life. Check it out!

MarketSmart Research

http://www.marketsmartresearch.com/

If you need market research done for your industry, MarketSmart Research is a great resource. But Toni Wilson doesn't just hand out research data -- she can also teach you how to find it and do the analysis yourself.

Toni needed a site that would allow her to blog about industry issues, serve up past articles and whitepapers for download, and also let visitors learn about and register for her seminars. We had a great time working with Toni to get this site working for her business, and she tells us that adding new information to the site is "easy and intuitive".

Morrison's Feed Mill

http://www.morrisonsfeeds.com/

If you've got animals, odds are good that you feed them on a fairly regular basis. We get all of our feed from Morrison's Custom Feeds, a family-owned feed mill located in Barnet, Vermont. They also have a store in St Johnsbury that carries all of their own feeds plus useful farm-life stuff like chicken feeders, electric fencing, and those big giant buckets of molasses for horses. Morrison's Feeds are in high demand, because they offer 100% organic versions of most of their feeds. If you need alot of feed, they'll custom-mix just the right blend of grains and nutrients for your animals and deliver it directly to your farm.

Their website needed to keep visitors in-the-know about current specials and offers at the store, as well as have wholesale information for the mill. Each page in the store has details about what feeds and products are sold, and frequently asked questions about each type of animal. Everyone who works at Morrison's grew up either with the mill or on a farm, and they have tons of great information about keeping all sorts of animals.

Extra special webmeadow bonus: We needed a good picture of the mill itself for the "About the Mill" page, and were having a hard time getting our hands on one. Just days before the site launched, we took a lovely kayaking trip down the Connecticut River and floated right by (the back of) the mill. With the fall colors and everything, we had to take a picture, and it ended up on the site! People, that is what we call full-service website making.

Rock The Boat

http://www.rocktheboatmarketing.com/

When Pat decided to start Rock the Boat Marketing, a consulting firm that advises companies on digital strategy, she thought she'd better get a pretty awesome website. So she came to us! Once again, we got a smashing design from Elise over at Pixels & Pulp, so the site looks great.

It's got all the standard stuff like a blog and nice archives and an easy-to-use interface. It's also got some great expandable options, so that, for example, if Pat wants to start a podcast, everything is all ready for her! This project went really quickly and smoothly, and we were excited to make such a great site for Pat and Rock the Boat Marketing.

P.S. A bonus of working on site called "Rock the Boat" is that if you are like me and you mis-type things all the time, you are really working on a site called Rock the Boar Marketing. Rrawr!

Recycle Together

http://www.recycletogether.com/

What do you do when you have an employee who breezes through everything on his to-do list in half the time you expected? Well, you have him tackle the ever-growing list of "client profiles that we need to write". So sayeth Zeb:

Since Captain Planet was taken off the air, very few heroes have come to our aid in fighting global climate change.  Now there's a new super-group in town, and it's name is Recycle Together. This recently-formed brainchild of The Climate Group is comprised of some of the largest corporations today -- Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Nestle, and Snapple -- and with their powers combined, they plan to fight global climate change one recyclable at a time.

This site aims to be the go-to place for any city or municipality that wants to jumpstart or revamp their recycling program, and it also happens to be a great resource for anyone to learn more about how recycling helps the environment. There are pages on how to get started, profiles of Model Cities that already have excellent recycling facilities and systems in place, and even information about venue recycling to deal with large-scale waste management.

Designed by Pixels & Pulp, we built RecycleTogether.com to give the folks at The Climate Group ways to easily add new Model Cities, expand the FAQ section, and build the site into the City Recycling authority it is obviously destined to be.

Rave Review:

"I've worked with Aaron and Eileen at webmeadow on several projects both for SellMore Marketing and other clients over the years. I keep coming back because of their high quality work.

Our latest project was no exception -- I've received great feedback from people who have visited the site. The site effectively and easily turns anonymous visitors into qualified leads. webmeadow has played a significant role in the growth of my web-based clientele. Thank you."
